Hey guys, what’s up? For today’s topic, we wanna talk about 5 harmful ingredients to avoid in skin care products. As you know, this is important because it involves our health and wellbeing, apart from taking care of our beauty routine.
Artificial Fragrance/Parfum. Yep. This is a big NO-NO guys. Why? Let me tell you why – it’s actually a cocktail of carcinogens, allergens, endocrine disruptors, and irritants. All bad news in an ingredients. So my advice, stay away from this okay? It is available in almost every single conventional skincare and cosmetic product. Manufacturers aren’t exactly required to reveal what’s actually in their fragrances, so you’ll simply see “Fragrance” or “Parfum” on the ingredients list. BEWARE.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS & SLES). Such sophisticated name eh? I feel smarter already by pronouncing this ingredient’s name. It is a foaming agent that used in a certain of personal care products, including skin care and cosmetics, shampoo, and toothpaste. Toothpaste guys. This surfactants can cause skin irritation or trigger allergies. Bad bad news. By-products of the sulphation process can produced a chemical called “nitrosamines”. FYI, 90% of “nitrosamines” are believed to be carcinogenic. Yep, you’re welcome.
Phthalates. Phthalates is a plasticizer that is added to plastic to keep it from becoming brittle. Primarily, Phthalates is used in cosmetics, in fragrance in particular. Besides that, it can be found in nail polish and hair spray as well. This ingredients can be identified as DBP, DEHP, and DEP. How is it harmful? Well, it is an endocrine disruptors and can cause hormonal and reproductive problems and birth defects. Yeah, seriously. Take note on this one alright?
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG). It is used in many types of cosmetics as a thickener. Like shampoo, lotion, and sunscreen. Usually, PEG always being contaminated by ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen) and 1,4-Dioxane (which causes respiratory problems). Fun fact – 1,4-Dioxane is banned in Canada. You know how harmful it is when it being banned by certain country.
Oxybenzone (and other chemical sunscreens). This last harmful ingredient and most important to know about, so please put your extra attention on this one. The most common sunscreens on the market use chemical filters such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule. Oxybenzone is known and been shown to alter thyroid function. Other than that, FDA’s research in 2019 has found that it also have been linked to hormone disruption, negative birth outcomes, reduced male fertility, and possibly cancer, are absorbed in the body in substantial amounts right after application.
Not only that, after FDA’s research in 2020, they discovered that six chemical UV filters are detectable on the skin and in the bloodstream weeks after application. ‘”Blood tests showed concentrations of oxybenzone were more than 180 times the FDA’s level of concern after a single application, and soared to more than 500 times after 4 days of regular use.” Guys, this is scary and this info needs to be spread around like you spilling the tea on social media.
Chemical sunscreens should be avoided at all costs—especially with children! Oh, and Oxybenzone also found in SPF lotions, lip balm, and makeup. So please beware alright guys?
To find mineral-only sunscreens, you need to check the ingredients. Find a product that uses Zinc Oxide and has no parabens or other harmful ingredients in it.
